Writing in Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan, the Traverse City area specifically, offers a myriad of resources for the up and coming writer. The National Writer's Series, was started in 2009 to bring popular writers world wide to Traverse City. It was founded by writers Doug and Anne Stanton and attorney Grant Parsons. In 2010, the NWS has brought many popular writers, including Rhoda Janzen, Mary Karr, Tom Brokaw, and many others, to downtown Traverse City to speak about their current novels in addition to providing insight into the world of writing and publishing for novice authors just beginning their careers. I personally attended 'A Night with Amy Alkon,' and found her reading and discussion of writing to be hilarious, candid and quite inspiring. For more information on the National Writer's Series check out their website @ http://nationalwritersseries.org/..

Michigan Writer's Inc. began in 2001 to support and provide resources to Michigan writers. Writers can join their network for a fee (which also includes a free subscrition to Dunes Review and allows them to submit work to their cooperative press) or simply visit their website for details on news and events in the northern Michigan writing community. They also frequently advertise writing workshops (many held in downtown Traverse City) some of which are free. As a member of Michigan Writers Inc., I have attended a very informative writers' workshop called 'Courting the Muse,' and found a writer's group, which unfortunately is no longer together. Michigan Writing

As a writer, I often find myself searching for some connection to other writers in my area. Unfortunately, I rarely find many. I know that there are other writers out there, floating around in this giant bubble, occasionally bumping into one another, usually without even knowing it. But I don't intend to spend this time talking about writing loneliness. I want to use this website to compile links, articles and events for writers in Michigan. I hope to become more organized myself in the process, but also to provide a guide for writers in Michigan searching for more resources.
